CHAPTER 18

We landed on Hudson Bay a few days later.

It was not a comfortable trip. I had to listen to Chip gloat about how he was right, how I got us in so deep we were never going to get out. He kept going back and forth between the I told you so’s and complaining that he was going to get thrown in the brig again.

“The guy hates my guts, man. He’s going to find some bullshit technicality and use it to lock me up again. I just know it.”

“He’s not going to do that,” I said, annoyed.

“That’s what you said last time.”

“I did not say that last time. You were out of your element. I’m not going to let that happen again. You’ll be fine.”

Chip snorted. “Yeah, okay. I was right about the Corporate Council chick, Jack. I’m telling you, this Grieg guy, he hated us before he knew we were working with Fleet Intel. Now, he’s going to be about as helpful as MRE coffee rations.”

“He’d be pretty damned stupid to start flexing his rank against us now that he knows we’re with Fleet Intel. Grieg is a prideful son of a bitch, but he’s not that stupid. He may not help us, but he won’t interfere either.”

“We’ll see about that. Let it be known, I’m calling it right now. This guy’s going to screw us over at every available opportunity.”

I let him rant for a while more, not bothering to try to talk him down.

He continued whining off and on the entire time we were in T-space.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, I then had to listen to Kan-Zin-Tel incessantly reminding me that Val was going to be furious with me. He kept repeating it every few minutes, like a mantra, until I finally snapped at him.

“I get it, Kan. This is all going down in Fleet Intel’s purview, and I just made a deal in direct conflict with that. But you’re forgetting that this is all off-the-books. That means I’m the authority here. As captain of the ship, I’m also the commander of the mission. If Val doesn’t like it, she can find someone who’s actually in the military and has to follow her orders. Last time I checked, that doesn’t apply to any of us.”

Kan-Zin-Tel grumbled but didn’t argue.

I patted him on the back. He shrugged me off.

“Besides, you should take advantage of us being back on this shitpot and go see your girlfriend.”

Chip cast a discreet look at the Tahni, watching him like a bear that had just been poked and was about to fly into a rage.

Kan-Zin-Tel sat very still, rage boiling off of him.

“You know not of what you speak.”

“I know plenty. Matlin-Sen hasn’t forgotten about you. It’s only been a few weeks. She’s not shacking up with any of the miscreants stirring up trouble out here. She’s saving herself for a brave, honorable warrior like yourself. You shouldn’t let that opportunity go to waste.”

“My personal business is my own. I do not need to be lectured by a human on how to conduct my personal affairs.
